THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SECURITY OFFICER

As a registered security guard, you have certain responsibilities to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.  In order to prevent possible denial or revocation of your registration card, it is important that you be aware of the following:

1. Security guards must meet several requirements before they begin work. These requirements include submitting your application on line or by mail with the required fees to the Bureau.

2. Submitting your fingerprints to the Department of Justice via Live Scan immediately.

3. While on duty you are required to possess a valid security guard registration or a screen printout of the Bureau’s approval from the Bureau’s Web site at www.bsis.ca.gov, along with a valid photo identification.

4. You may not carry a firearm without a firearm permit issued by the Bureau. You may not carry a firearm if your guard registration is not current even though your firearm permit is current.

5. Firearm permits expire two years from the date of issuance. An applicant must re-qualify four times during the life of the permit: twice during the first year after the date of issuance, and twice during the second year. Re-qualifications must be at least four months apart.

6. You may not carry a baton without a baton permit issued by the Bureau. You may not carry a baton if your guard registration is not current even though your baton  permit is current.

7. If you move or change your address, you must notify the Bureau within 30 days, or you may be issued an administrative fine.

8. If your employer or any instructor encourages you to violate any of the above requirements, you may report him/her to the Bureau in writing.
