California Guard Card Requirements: How to Become a Security Guard
To become a licensed security guard, you’ll be working for a licensed Private Patrol Operator or a private security company. Your main job will be to protect people and property or prevent theft, as outlined in the Business and Professions Code Section 7582.1. Before you can even apply for your security guard registration through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), you’ll need to meet some specific requirements:
Step 1: Complete Your Initial Training
You’ll start by completing an 8-hour Guard Card training course. This essential training covers two key areas:
- Power to Arrest: This part of the training is typically completed online. It teaches you the legal authority and limitations of a security guard when making an arrest.
- Appropriate Use of Force: This component is done in-person at a licensed training facility like SOTC. You’ll learn the proper and legal ways to use force when necessary in your duties.
Important: You’ll need to show proof that you completed the online “Power to Arrest” portion (Part A) before you can take the in-person “Appropriate Use of Force” segment (Part B).
Step 2: Get Fingerprinted (Live Scan)
This is a mandatory step for your background check. You’ll go to a Live Scan location to have your fingerprints electronically submitted to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI. This process helps ensure you meet the necessary criminal history requirements.
Step 3: Submit Your Security Guard Application
Once you’ve completed your initial training and Live Scan fingerprinting, you’re ready to apply for your Guard Card. You’ll submit your application directly through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) BreEZe website. Applying online is generally the fastest way to get your application processed.
Step 4: Complete Your Continuing Education
Getting your initial Guard Card is just the beginning! California requires you to complete an additional 32 hours of training within the first six months of receiving your card. This is usually broken down:
- 16 hours within the first 30 days of getting your Guard Card.
- Another 16 hours within the following 6 months.
These continuing education courses ensure you stay up-to-date with industry standards and best practices. SOTC offers all the required continuing education courses you’ll need.
Key Things to Remember
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to get your security guard license in California.
- Application Fees: Be aware there’s an initial application fee when you submit your paperwork to the BSIS.
- Processing Time: While processing times can vary, expect it to take about 15-20 business days if there are no issues with your application.
- Employer Requirements: Some employers might require additional training or education beyond the state’s minimum requirements.
- Disqualifications: A criminal conviction for a crime significantly related to the duties of a security guard can lead to your application being denied.
