California’s SB 652 tightened how guard card training works. Applicants who piece their training together from a $40 online course and a second school are the ones getting applications sent back. Here is what the law now requires — and what we do about it.

“You can work right after class on your training certificate.” Not in California. You can start working once BSIS approves your registration and it shows on the state’s website — carry the printout and your photo ID until the card arrives.

Why not just do it online for $40?
Because since 2026 the whole 8-hour course has to come from one provider, include in-person time, and be finished within 6 months of applying. Mixing a cheap online course with another school is how applications get rejected — and then you pay twice.

What if I fail the test?
The exam is open-book and the state requires 100%. If you miss something, your instructor walks you through it and you retake it. Practice free first.
Are there hidden fees?
No. Every fee is listed above, including the ones that go to the state. If a school only advertises its class price, ask them for the all-in number.
What will I actually earn?
Security guards in San Diego average about $20 an hour (Indeed, July 2026). Armed posts and extra certifications typically pay more. We don’t promise jobs — nobody honest can — but we’ll tell you which certifications local employers ask for.†

Is SOTC actually licensed?
Yes. Our BSIS facility and instructor licenses (TFF-1220, TFB-1122, TIF-1865, TIB-1591) are listed in our footer — verify any of them yourself on the state’s DCA License Search.

San Diego security guard card questions, answered for 2026
Be 18 or older, complete the 8-hour Power to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force training from a single BSIS-approved provider within the 6 months before you apply (new under SB 652), pass the open-book exam with 100%, submit your BSIS application with the $60 state fee, and complete Live Scan fingerprinting. Once BSIS approves you, you can start work. Within your first 6 months you complete 32 more hours of security-officer skills training. SOTC handles the class, files your application for you, and offers every follow-up course.
Your SOTC training is completed in person on the dates you choose (weekday and Saturday classes). We file your application online the same week and you complete Live Scan. BSIS typically approves clean, complete online applications in about 2–4 weeks; mismatched names on Live Scan, missing information, or a criminal-history review can add time. You can check your status any time on the state’s DCA License Search.
Only after BSIS approves you. According to BSIS, once your registration is approved and shows on the Bureau’s website, you may work while you wait for the plastic card, as long as you carry a printout of the approval and a valid photo ID. You cannot work as a guard on a training certificate alone — be wary of any school that says otherwise.
At SOTC the guard card class is $125. Everything to get licensed and compliant runs about $460 all-in: the 8-hour class ($125), the AB 2880 course ($200), our BSIS BreEZe filing service ($25), the BSIS state application fee ($60, paid to the state), and Live Scan fingerprinting (about $50, varies by location, paid to the Live Scan site). Packages that add firearms, CPR and more start at $800.
Not entirely. Since January 1, 2026 (SB 652), the 8-hour Power to Arrest & Use of Force training must be administered and certified by one provider, completed within 6 months before you apply, and include in-person classroom instruction. Splitting it between a cheap online course and another school can get your application kicked back. At SOTC the whole course is taught in person by one licensed provider.

Often, yes. A conviction is not an automatic disqualifier — BSIS looks at whether it is substantially related to security work, how long ago it happened, and evidence of rehabilitation. Be completely honest on the application; leaving something off is itself a reason for denial. Call us confidentially before you spend money and we will tell you what we have seen. You need an active guard card plus a BSIS Exposed Firearm Permit. That means firearms training and range qualification with a BSIS-licensed firearms facility and instructor (SOTC holds both: TFF-1220 and TIF-1865), a psychological assessment, the permit application, and you must be 21+. After that you requalify on the range four times over each two-year permit. See the armed guard path.
California requires 16 hours for an initial CCW and 8 hours for renewal, including live-fire qualification with each firearm you list (Penal Code 26165, as amended by SB 2). SOTC’s CCW courses meet these requirements and are offered monthly. San Diego CCW guide.
