California's structure: 8 hours pre-application (this class), then 32 hours of remaining BSIS-mandated topics completed within 6 months of getting your card. Total BSIS curriculum: 40 hours. You can start working between class and card delivery under California's 90-day rule.
No experience needed at all. This course is designed for beginners. Our instructors teach everything from the ground up. If you can follow instructions and pay attention, you can complete this training.
Yes. The 8-hour Powers to Arrest + Use of Force class is California's required pre-application training. After this, you submit your BSIS application (we file BreEZe for you). The remaining 32 hours of BSIS-mandated topics (40 hours total) are completed within 6 months of getting your card — typically on weekends while you're already working. SOTC offers all the follow-up modules.
Yes. California law allows you to work for up to 90 days while your initial guard card application is pending with BSIS. Your SOTC training certificate is your proof of eligibility during that window — most students are earning a paycheck within 1–2 weeks of class.
