You've decided to learn. We'll show you how to do it safely, legally, and with real confidence.
More Californians are buying their first handgun than at any point in modern memory. Most have never been taught how to handle one. This page is for adults — including people who never imagined themselves at a range — who want to learn to shoot safely, understand California law, and feel competent with a firearm in their home. No machismo, no judgment.
What "First-Time" Training Actually Covers
Our beginner course is the exact opposite of being handed a loaded gun by a friend and told to "just point at the target." We start with the universal safety rules and don't move to live fire until you're demonstrably comfortable. The full session covers:
The four universal firearms safety rules — the foundation everything else rests on
Parts of the firearm, how it works, and how to inspect it
Safe storage at home — California's safe-storage laws and what they require
Grip, stance, sight alignment, sight picture, and trigger control — taught with inert (dummy) firearms first
California-specific law basics — possession, transport, the 10-day waiting period, FSC, and what counts as a sensitive location
Live-fire range time — one-on-one supervised, starting at close range, working up gradually
Loading, unloading, and clearing malfunctions — the mechanical skills that come up every range visit
What to do if you ever have to use a firearm in self-defense — the legal and procedural reality, including aftermath

Our beginner class is designed for absolute first-timers. No prior experience expected. We provide the firearm, ammunition, and one-on-one instruction.
The California Basics You Need to Know Before You Buy
California has more firearm regulations than almost any other state. Three things every first-time buyer should know:
Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC). California requires this short written test (30 questions, taken at a licensed dealer) for almost every firearm purchase. It's good for five years.
10-day waiting period. Every California handgun transaction includes a mandatory 10-day waiting period between purchase and pickup. No exceptions for state residents.
Safe storage law. California Penal Code 25100 et seq. requires firearms to be stored in a way that prevents access by prohibited persons (including minors). Violations carry criminal penalties.
The live-fire portion is the part most first-time shooters are nervous about. Here's how SOTC structures it to lower that wall:
One-on-one with the instructor. You're not on a public lane next to strangers; you have a trained instructor at your shoulder the entire time.
Inert practice first. Grip, stance, sight picture, and trigger press are drilled with empty firearms before any live rounds.
Close range to start. First live rounds at 3 yards on a forgiving target. You build confidence before distance.
Hearing and eye protection provided. Properly fitted before any shooting begins.
Step away at any time. You're never pressured. If something feels off, you pause, reset, or stop.
What's Next After This Class
Most first-time gun owner students do one of three things after our beginner class:
Practice independently. You'll leave with the fundamentals and the safety habits to keep training on your own at any local range.
Pursue a California CCW permit. When you're ready, our CCW training course (16 hours, PC 26165) is the next step.
Pursue armed security work. If you want to turn the skill into income, the BSIS firearms permit opens armed security guard posts paying $22–$32/hr in San Diego.
✅ Training is the responsible first step
Owning a firearm without training is a hazard to you, your family, and people around you. The good news: competent training is one weekend away. You don't have to be an expert — you have to be safe and informed.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. SOTC's beginner classes include a steady mix of first-time owners across every demographic — women, retirees, working professionals, and parents are the majority. The instructor's job is to make sure every student leaves competent, regardless of where they started.
Modern 9mm hearing protection (worn properly) makes range noise much more manageable than people expect. Recoil on a standard 9mm pistol is mild — most first-timers describe it as a firm push, not painful. The instructor will start you with the lightest setup that's still realistic.
Take the class first. You'll learn what to look for in a first handgun — and which features matter for your hand size, intended use, and home storage situation. Many of our students leave class with a clear shopping list instead of a wallet full of guesswork.
For basic competence and home-defense safety, one class plus regular self-practice is meaningful. For carrying in public (CCW), California requires 16 hours of additional approved training. Ongoing practice is always recommended — firearms are a perishable skill.
