A no-fluff plan for switching into a stable, hiring-now career as a licensed security guard.
Layoffs aren't slowing down. Tech, biotech, retail, healthcare admin, and warehouse roles have all been hit hard in San Diego County over the last 24 months. If you're reading this, the first thing to know: this isn't your fault, and a real reset is closer than it feels.
This page is for people who need a paycheck in 30 days, not 30 weeks. It's a practical plan — what to do this week, this month, and what it actually pays.
Of the legal pathways into a paying job that requires no prior experience and no degree, three usually come up: CDL truck driving, real estate, and licensed security. Truck driving requires $5,000+ in schooling and weeks on the road. Real estate takes 3–6 months to your first commission. Security is faster, cheaper, and pays from week one.
Pick a class date from this month's schedule. SOTC runs guard card classes weekdays AND weekends. Lock in your seat. If you're collecting EDD unemployment, training to improve your employability is allowed — but verify your specific situation with EDD.
California requires 40 hours of BSIS-approved training total: the 8-hour Powers to Arrest course (required before you can start work), then 32 hours of follow-up training within 6 months. SOTC handles both. We file your BSIS application for you at no extra charge — you don't have to figure out the paperwork alone.
Your SOTC training certificate is your proof of eligibility for up to 90 days while BSIS processes your card. Apply to Allied Universal, Securitas, GardaWorld, plus local San Diego firms like American Patrol, Coast Security, and Bonita Security. Apply to 10–15 in week one alone. Most will respond within a few days.
Bring your training certificate to interviews. Be straightforward about why you're entering security: stable work, you want to be reliable, you can pass a background check. Most laid-off students have their first shift inside 30 days of enrolling.
Spots fill 1–2 weeks ahead. The earlier you commit, the more dates you have to choose from.
Recessions hit some industries hard — and barely touch others. Security is in the second category. Three reasons:
Pay depends on the post and certifications. Here's what to expect:
At $22/hr full-time (40 hr/wk), you're at roughly $45,800/year before overtime. Most agencies offer time-and-a-half above 40 hours, and overtime is almost always available — many guards bring their annual income to $55,000–$70,000 inside year one.
If you want to clear $50,000 in your first year, you don't need a degree — you need three things on your resume:
Want this bundled? The Guard Card Package #1 ($800) covers guard card + firearms + CPR. Most laid-off students who do the full bundle are out-earning their previous role within 60–90 days.
Your previous work history is an asset, not a reset button. Reliability, professionalism, customer-facing skills, and the ability to follow a procedure are exactly what security agencies want. The license is the missing piece.
California EDD generally allows you to receive benefits while training to improve your employability, as long as you remain available for work and continue your work-search. Many of our laid-off students complete the guard card course while still on EDD. Always verify your specific case directly with EDD.
In the short term it's a different role, but the math says otherwise long-term. Site supervisor, field supervisor, operations manager, and corporate-security positions pay $60K–$120K+ and prefer candidates with both a license and prior corporate experience. The license is the on-ramp. Many of our graduates are running security operations for tech firms inside 24 months.
BSIS reviews each application individually. Misdemeanors from years ago, financial issues, and certain other items don't automatically disqualify you. Call us at (619) 303-3104 for a confidential conversation before you enroll — we can give you straight answers about what BSIS will and won't pass.
A certificate program or AA degree takes 1–2 years and $5,000–$25,000. Most don't lead to a specific guaranteed job. Security is the inverse: weeks, not years; $125, not $5,000; a real license that San Diego employers actively hire for right now.
No. The guard card and firearms permit don't expire your other options — they add to them. Many graduates use security as a paycheck-stabilizer while they search for the next big role in their original field, or while they go back to school. It's a floor, not a ceiling.
The class is monthly. The reset starts the day you enroll.
