Getting your California guard card is simpler than most people think. This guide gives you the full picture — from deciding to start, all the way to landing your first security job.

⏱️ How Long Does This Take?

Most people complete the entire process in 3–5 weeks. Training at SOTC takes 1–2 weekends. BSIS processing takes 2–4 weeks. You could be working in security within 1–2 weeks of starting this guide.

Phase 1 — Make Sure You Qualify (1 day)

Before you invest any money, confirm you meet the basic requirements:

Phase 2 — Choose Your Training Path (1 day)

SOTC offers several paths depending on your goals:

Unarmed Guard

Guard Card Only — $125

Just the guard card course. Gets you licensed to work as an unarmed security guard. Best if you want to start working fast and add certs later.

Armed Guard (Recommended)

Package #1 or #2 — $800–$1,000

Guard card + firearms + specialty certs. You start your career with a complete resume that earns more from day one.

Phase 3 — Complete Your Training at SOTC

Training takes place at our Spring Valley facility. Here's what to expect:

Phase 4 — BSIS Application (SOTC Does This for You)

After training, SOTC helps you submit your BSIS application. Here's what happens:

Important: 90-Day Work Authorization

While your application is being processed, California allows you to work as a security guard for up to 90 days. Your SOTC completion certificate serves as your temporary authorization. Don't wait for your card to arrive before looking for work.

Phase 5 — Start Working

With your guard card (or your training certificate as temporary authorization), you can start applying for security jobs in San Diego and beyond. Here's where guards typically find work:

Many SOTC graduates find work within 1–2 weeks of receiving their guard card. Security is one of the fastest fields to enter after training.

Phase 6 — Keep Growing Your Career

Your guard card is just the beginning. The more certifications you have, the more you earn. After getting your card, consider adding:
