Your Complete Roadmap to the Guard Card

Getting your California guard card is simpler than most people think. This guide gives you the full picture — from deciding to start, all the way to landing your first security job.

Phase 1 — Make Sure You Qualify (1 day)

Before you invest any money, confirm you meet the basic requirements:

• You are at least 18 years old
• You can pass a California DOJ background check
• You are legally authorized to work in the United States
• You can read and write in English (required for the training)

If you're not sure about the background check, call us. We can give you an honest assessment before you spend a dime.

Phase 2 — Choose Your Training Path (1 day)

SOTC offers several paths depending on your goals:

Phase 3 — Complete Your Training at SOTC

Training takes place at our Spring Valley facility. Here's what to expect:

  Duration: 40 hours total. Most students do this over 1–2 weekends

  Format: Classroom instruction + practical exercises. SOTC provides all materials

  What to bring: Government-issued photo ID, pen, notebook, comfortable clothing

  At the end: You receive a training completion certificate signed by your SOTC instructor

Phase 4 — BSIS Application (SOTC Does This for You)

After training, SOTC helps you submit your BSIS application. Here's what happens:

  We help you fill out the BSIS application form correctly

  You submit your application + the BSIS fee directly to the state (approx. $50)

  BSIS runs your DOJ background check

  If approved, BSIS mails your guard card to your home address

Phase 5 — Start Working

With your guard card (or your training certificate as temporary authorization), you can start applying for security jobs in San Diego and beyond. Here's where guards typically find work:

• Security companies and staffing agencies
• Hotels and resorts
• Hospitals and healthcare facilities
• Schools and universities
• Shopping malls and retail stores
• Banks and financial institutions
• Events and concerts
• Private businesses and office buildings

Many SOTC graduates find work within 1–2 weeks of receiving their guard card. Security is one of the fastest fields to enter after training.

Phase 6 — Keep Growing Your Career

Your guard card is just the beginning. The more certifications you have, the more you earn. After getting your card, consider adding:

• Firearms permit — adds $5–$15/hr to your pay
• Taser certification — more job options, higher pay
• CPR & First Aid — required for many employers
• Baton and OC spray certification — complete your resume
• CCW permit — for personal protection and civilian carry
