One of the most common questions we hear at SOTC is "how much is this going to cost me?" It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: less than one week of pay at your new rate.
This guide gives you every single number, broken down by certification type. No hidden fees, no vague estimates. Just the real costs so you can make an informed decision.
What It Costs to Get Your Security Guard Card
The California security guard card has three mandatory costs:
| Fee | Cost | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 8-Hour Powers to Arrest Class (SOTC) | $125 | BSIS-approved pre-application course. One day. Spring Valley, CA. |
| AB 2880 Course (required by CA law) | $200 | Required for every new CA guard card applicant since 2024. BSIS won't approve without it. |
| BSIS BreEZe Submission (SOTC files for you) | $25 | We handle your BSIS BreEZe portal submission so nothing gets rejected for a technicality. |
| Live Scan Fingerprinting | $49–$75 | Paid to third-party Live Scan provider. SOTC directs you to the closest one. |
| BSIS Guard Card Application Fee | $50 | Paid to BSIS via BreEZe portal. Your license is valid for 2 years. |
| Guard Card All-In Total | $449–$475 | Everything to become a fully-applied CA security guard. |
Note on the BSIS "Start to Work" certificate: SOTC provides this after your class, free of charge. This certificate allows you to work legally as a security guard for up to 90 days while your full guard card application is being processed. You don't pay extra for this, it's included in your training.

The Real ROI: What You Get Back
Security guard training is not a cost and it's an investment with a fast, measurable return. Here's how the math works:
Guard Card Only: ~$449 All-In Investment
Start working at $19/hr in San Diego. 40 hrs × $19 = $760/week. Your ~$449 all-in investment is returned in under 3 days of work. Every hour after that is pure income. (Pay range illustrative, see disclaimer.)
Guard Card + Armed (EFP): ~$674 Investment
Move to $27/hr armed rate. 40 hrs × $27 = $1,080/week. Your ~$674 investment returns in under 4 days of work at the armed rate. The $225 EFP add-on alone can yield $16,000+ more per year than the unarmed baseline. (Pay range illustrative. See disclaimer.)
Full Package #2: $1,000 Investment
With 6+ certifications, you qualify for the best-paying posts immediately. Starting at $28–$30/hr with your full cert stack. 40 hrs × $29 = $1,160/week. Your $1,000 investment returns in under 1 week of work. Annual income: ~$60,320+.
Frequently Asked Cost Questions
No. The prices listed are what you pay. SOTC includes BSIS paperwork filing for free with your guard card training, that's a service other schools charge extra for or don't offer at all. The only "extra" costs are the government fees (BSIS application: $50, Live Scan: ~$49–$75) that are paid directly to BSIS and the fingerprint provider, not to SOTC.
Call SOTC at (619) 303-3104 to discuss payment options. We understand that coming up with cash upfront isn't always easy, and we'd rather work with you than have you miss out on training. We'll tell you what's possible for your situation.
Some security companies and employers will reimburse or prepay for training if you commit to working for them. Many employers will at minimum pay for CPR, taser, and baton training for guards they've already hired. Ask any prospective employer about their training reimbursement policy before paying out of pocket.
SOTC recognizes military service and works with veterans on training costs. Call us at (619) 303-3104 to discuss veteran-specific options. Many veterans also find that their prior firearms experience means the EFP course is faster and easier for them and making the investment even more worthwhile.
